A faithful teacher deserves his wages. A church should be willing to provide physically for the food they receive spiritually. Those who preach from the gospel should also live from the gospel. But Paul gave up his right to remuneration for the cause of Christ.

7/31/2022Right to reap
Our love for others should exceed our love for liberty. Paul uses himself as an example: He, as a minister has the right to financial support yet he did not ask for it, using his own work to support himself. The Jews had a tradition of support through the tithe and offerings, but the Gentiles did not have this tradition in their culture.

God, in His infinite power, directs the greatest to the least toward the purpose for which they were created. He is the first cause of all things and what God desires, so He does. If God does remove His earthly blessings, we should still praise Him for we are in His hand and everything that happens is in His will. The Lord gets His best soldiers out of the highlands of affliction.

Do not use your liberty in Christ to cause another to act against their conscience. What is acceptable for you may not be for your brother in Christ. Paul endorses remaining single, but that is not a gift everyone has. To avoid sexual immorality, marriage between one man and one woman is the model provided by God in Genesis. Men and women in marriage must meet the needs of the other. Our culture has attempted to normalize the destruction of biblical marriage.

5/15/2022Remove the wicked
Unchecked sin leads to more sin. Do not keep company/fellowship with a sexually immoral person, a greedy person, an idolater, one who is verbally abusive, habitually drunk, or a swindler. The jurisdiction for discipline of this behavior is inside the church - those outside are already judged by God. Church discipline is both to put away evil from her, and to bring those practicing it to repentance and restoration.

5/8/2022Health of the Body
This section gives two admonitions regarding sexual immorality (porneia) in the Church: it must be rightly judged and removed from the congregation. It must be cleansed for the health of the Body because the Church is purified by Christ - why then would we allow sin to leaven the church? We should have an attitude of mourning for those involved while desiring them to repent and be healed.

Paul uses six rhetorical questions to the Galatians in order to open their eyes to the foolishness of leaning on a works-righteousness through the Law when they have received all good things only through faith. Abraham was righteous through faith, and if we have faith also, we will be blessed in the same way as Abraham.

Paul describes his visit to Jerusalem during the council there. Paul encounters the Judaizers who sought to tie a works requirement to the gospel. But they did not yield in subjection to them. Legalism also occurs in the Church today (Hebrew roots movement, Social justice movement). Peter, James, and John, recognizing their common gospel from Christ with Paul, encouraged them to go to the Gentiles.

As we complete our sermon series on the book of Romans, Mike reviewed what we have read. There is none righteous, we need His help. We are justified by faith, but this is also a gift of God. We realize that we are sinful, but there is now no condemnation for those in Christ who He predestined. We need a heart to preach the Gospel. Depths and riches of God are past finding out. We need to present our bodies as a living sacrifice. God raises leaders which He ordains. We should help and build up the weaker to make them strong warriors. God receives all the glory because he has created all and He has done it all.

The doctrine of inspiration affirms that God's Word is breathed out by Him. The doctrine of preservation affirms that God will preserve His Word for us so that the Word is available to His people. God has revealed Himself to us: He walked with Adam, spoke with Moses, spoke by His Son, revealed through Jesus, through the Apostles, and through the New Testament.

Many people around the world ask the question 'How can I be right with God?'. Paul has presented the human condition and pointed out our sin. God is impartial in the judgment of men. Those who do not have the special revelation of God, have general revelation through the creation and their own conscience. On these men are judged, and these are things that all men have access to. But not just hearers will be justified but doers. All men have enough knowledge to be condemned but will not be saved through it because of our frailties. There is a time when wickedness abounds and also when it will be judged. The world is not fair and we long for fairness, but we are not in control of the future and our happiness is not contingent on the future. Enjoy God's gifts today and let God handle what will be.

There is an appointed time for everything in the rhythms of life and this forms the tapestry of our lives where only God knows the final picture. God has set eternity in our hearts so we seek knowledge, seek to know the past, the future and seek meaning beyond our own lives. One day we will see things with our eyes clear of the scales of sin.

Solomon sees the futility in his work because all that he has worked for during his life, in the end, may be left to a man, in his case Rehoboam, who may be wise or may be a fool so this too is vanity. But it is good for a man to tell himself that his work is good and give thanks to God, for the blessings of his labors are from God.

Solomon's grand experiment now turns to the test of wisdom, madness, and folly. He finds that wisdom is better than folly as light is to the day. But whether you live a life of wisdom or folly your end on earth is the same and there is no benefit for you. Only what is done for Christ will last.

Solomon writes that there is no profit for everything that man does in his life under the sun. Ecclesiastes is wisdom literature but is different in that the 'preacher' (assumed to be Solomon) reflects so much despair in the form of a personal essay. The overview of the book is there is nothing under the sun that can give meaning to life and the only thing that is fulfilling is to live a God-centered life.

Speaking with clarity will promote effective communication. The audience should be considered and clear definitions may be necessary. We ought to speak with respect, but how does that look? Respect for civil leadership is needed, but we must act as ambassadors where our ultimate allegiance is to God. 8/25/2019Speaking the Truth
We should speak with Respect, Humility, and Love, but the content of what we speak should be the truth. Hypocrisy should be lain aside and our response to it should be repentance. Flattery is when we attempt to advance ourselves by misrepresenting others. Oaths and vows to the Lord should be kept however because of our nature, we should avoid speaking about the future unless it is one of the promises of God, we make present-day statements about our plans or remember that it is as the Lord wills. Lying, humor, fiction, and sarcasm are also discussed.

Since we use words to express our thoughts, how then should Christians bring every thought and word captive to the obedience of Christ? God created with the use of the Word, granted us language to communicate with Him and then divided us by language as punishment for sin. At Pentecost, God made it possible to suspend the curse at Babel and in the fullness of time, this will ultimately be removed. How should we speak the truth - with purpose, discretion, respect, humility and clarity.

Sacrifices of gratitude will never become dated and this psalm is a summons to come and worship Him.

11/11/2018Hymn Psalms
Hymn Psalms contain poetry expressing wisdom or giving an offering of thanksgiving to God. Psalm 111 is one of the alphabetical acrostic Hymn Psalms in the form of each line beginning with a sequential character. The Psalm begins with calling others to join in praising God, presenting the reasons why we praise Him and finally showing what is true about God's praise and those who praise Him.

Ps 126 is one of the fifteen Psalms called the songs of ascent. It is a song of corporate lament of past events, a praise for the present restoration and a prayer for the remaining in Babylon. We should keep sowing precious seed, even though in tears and in adversity, so that, with Christ, the harvest continues to be bountiful.

10/28/2018Psalms of Lament
There are many corporate and individual Lament Psalms that express regret and sadness. They layout a difficult situation and cry out to God for His assistance, then trusting in His goodness. Mourning is always incomplete if not accompanied also by hope. Mark goes into more detail with Psalms 44 and 142.

10/21/2018Imprecatory or Curse Psalms
There are several groups of Psalms; Lament, Praise, Wisdom, Messianic, Davidic, and Imprecatory. Imprecatory or Curse Psalms call down destruction and God's wrath invoking misfortune on others. This sermon examines different schools of thought on these Psalms. Are these simply emotional responses of men and not God's will, only valid in old testament era? Are they prophetic and predict a future woe, or are they figurative?

10/7/2018Triple Imputation
There are three imputations, firstly that sin and death had ruled over man through the first imputation of Adam's sin onto us all. In the second imputation, our sins have been placed on Christ, paid for through His blood by His passive obedience. But we are not just breaking even, our blessings are endless as Christ's righteousness is also imputed to us through a third imputation. But in order for it to be imputed to us, Christ had to possess it - which He demonstrated by His active obedience.

By grace you have been saved through faith. The word saved is sozo, in the past perfect, and indicates that the work is already done. People who deserve Hell receive Heaven by His grace. Grace is a gift - so that boasting is excluded. Some boast in chariots and horses but we boast in the Lord. We are His workmanship, His craft, His poem (poieo) created in Christ for good works. Luther stated "It is not against works that we contend, but against trust in works".

We need to understand the magnitude of our transformation. We were born dead, a corpse, far from God, enemies of God, distorted from His image, in the wrong way, in our sins, under the direction of Satan, sons of disobedience, in rebellion, desiring the flesh, guided by the world, children of wrath. But now He was rich to us in Mercy, withholding His judgment for the sake of His Son, pouring out His love toward us, died for us, by Grace we were saved, He made us alive, and our identities are in

God gave the Sabbath to man for his benefit. He grants rest in time, place and also of soul. God set one day in seven and he created us to need this day of rest and praise. The Israelites were fearful and did not take a place of rest in Canaan, still, God secured the land for Joshua, Caleb and the children of Israel. And now, Today, a rest of soul has been secured for us through Jesus Christ - let us be diligent to enter into that rest.

The Cretans had been previously dominated by the Greeks and now the Romans. They needed both temporal salvation for society as well as eternal salvation for the people. But how can we build a church on this poor ground? We need to speak humbly with a command spirit authoritatively. Christ saved us through kindness, Love, His Mercy, washing of regeneration, renewing by the Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ by His Grace.
